More than 1,500 workers at Samsung’s home appliance factory in Chennai, India, have gone on strike, demanding a 50% wage increase over the next three years and better working conditions.

The workers are calling for official recognition of their newly formed union, the Samsung India Labour Welfare Union (SILWU), which they believe is necessary for fair negotiations with management.

The strike, now in its second week, has disrupted production at the plant, which contributes $4 billion to Samsung’s annual revenue in India.

Workers claim they face unsafe conditions and intense pressure to meet high production targets.

Samsung has denied the allegations, stating that it complies with Indian labor laws and has begun talks to resolve the situation.

Local authorities detained over 100 protesters for marching without permits but released them later. Negotiations are ongoing.
